The University of Miami is expending millions
of dollars in the construction of a new Ryder Arena, and at least one
other site has new construction signs.
Meanwhile, areas that have not been
accessible to people with disabilities,
continue to exist without remedies.
The Tennis Facility on campus has rest rooms
located with no privacy, to each
incoming person wanting to use a rest room. Most people in wheelchairs
can't use this primitive, unprivite toilet. The offices are
a giant step up, if you are in a wheelchair
and there is no stadium seating for people
with disabilities who use wheelchairs.
The U of M message, may as well be:
"Students
in wheelchairs, the Tennis Facility on campus is off limits."
Disabled parking is as close to the street as
possible, and the furthest parking
offered in the parking lot, requiring people with disabilities
to travel long distances, behind parked cars
to the entrance of the Tennis
Facility on campus. Even the spaces provided are too narrow.
Students, years ago sued the University of
Miami to achieve ADA access. The
results of the settlement are a secret from the community as the
University fought for a confidentiality
clause so the plaintiff's could not
discuss the time tables or even what the University agreed to remedy
or when. When is the question.
